A SINGLE MAN 

One Liverpool photographer is doing more to get our city ready for its close up than anyone. With his edgy and singular style, it’s just possible Matt Ford might even kill off those stereotypes once and for all, too.

hat do we look like? Well, if you grabbed the chance to watch the VBS hour long documentary ‘Beautiful Liverpool’ on our site last week, we look a little, um, sad.

Who knew our lads were even more orange than our lasses? Who knew everyone in town knows Amanda Moss? Who recognised the city they call home?

Well, in part maybe. But mostly we saw cynicism, desperation and the same, lame targets being coerced into reinforcing the same old stereotypes.

Cheap shots.

So we thought it only fair to redress the balance – and talk to someone who knows the true story. Someone whose refreshing and playful eye focuses in on a city that’s far more interesting, surprising and, yes, stylish than any tired and lazy documentary could ever show.

Because, let’s face it, if you want to know how beautiful we really are, you’ve got to do more than just scratch the surface.......

KIKI. Kirsty Doyle's exciting new daywear range.

With the likes of Machino with their Cheap and Chic range or Alice by Alice Temperley, it was only a matter of time before Liverpool's much loved bespoke fashion designer came up with her own range with a more accessible price point.  

Kirsty tells me she named the range KIKI, after the childhood nickname given to her by her younger sister. The new brand echoes some of Kirsty's famous designs such as the Lenore dress (strapless bustier) and the satin tuxe jacket.

The debut collection for KIKI tones down on the usual luxury silks and opts for breathable spring cottons, perfect for day wear. KIKI S/S11 promises to be affordable luxury....I'll let Kirsty tell you about the rest and show you her favourite pieces...(video includes prices)

Sandal making workshop with Liverpool's best kept design secret Nook and Willow. (and did I mention homemade cake)

Have you ever seen a pair of shoes and thought, they'd be better if.... Well now it's your chance to design, make and keep your own.

Leather accessories and handbag designer/makers nook and willow are opening up their design studio for their new sandal making workshop.

With Nook and Willows expertise and a wonderful array of leather samples, in just one afternoon you can create and wear your very own bespoke sandals. You will learn how to mould your material of choice over a traditional shoe makers last.  Then you could learn how to embellish your footwear with adornments such as fringed tassels, bows or studded straps.

Each workshop can accommodate up to five people, so you can book on your own and meet new people or book as a group, with your family, work colleges or even a hen party.

The workshops are scheduled to start at the end of the month and will be priced at £80. But if you book an early bird voucher (valid for three months) between now and 25th May you will pay just £60.

The Global Summit for Human Trafficking. (Ethical fashion blog continued)

Well firstly I've got to say how proud I am of the editor, Sophie Welsh, for taking what stated off as a news letter and turning it into a glossy microzine with an initial run of 10'000. Sophie then managed to get an audience with key organisers at the Global Summit for Human Trafficking to discus her plight and publication. Even the Chief of police for the cause now owns a copy.

The microzine, that will be stocked in Liverpool soon, features an ethical fashion shoot with clothes made under humane working conditions and with environmentally friendly resources and more importantly some hard hitting information on human trafficking. With over 800'000 women, children and even men being smuggled across boarders each year for slavery and the sex trade, Sophie hopes to raise awareness and also raise money for the charity with the profits from the microzine.

Dress up! Exclusive preview of Topshop's latest collection.

Did you know that the Liverpool Topshop sells more dresses than any other Topshop in the country, yes even after the flagship London store.

Well it's no surprise Scouse girls love to dress up, so the design team at Topshop has created a range of 12 party dresses that will sell nation wide but are geared especially for Liverpool girls.

Aren't you lucky!

'Dress up', road tested by local trend setter Maggi Matic at Firecracker HQ. The vintage inspired beaded mini dress has been styled up with her own black top hat and black leggings.

"Each dress has it’s own character suiting any mood and any event, whether it’s for a gig or a gala/glam function, these dresses embrace experimentation and allow for styling in an individual approach.

A black leather dress with gold studding, ruffled sleeves and black elastic strapping revealing the back channels an early 80’s punk influence and wouldn’t look out of place on stage at CBJB’s. A black jersey dress with a sweetheart neckline and sheer sleeves is adorned in silver lightning beading putting the rock into Glam whilst a simple grey snakeskin print halter is held at the neckline with chunky gold chain.

An all over rainbow of sequins dazzle on a simple sheath dress with a black leather bow tie belt whilst a fun fifties prom style frock in white with black polka dots has a full skirt and pale pink bodice dress has a tulle tu tu both begging to be worn on a dancefloor. Candy pink and lemon dresses froth like French fancy wrapping in cute cocktail dresses and flowers in pinks burst onto a sweet party dress with diamante detailing. Godess dresses feature with strong Grecian influences, an asymmetric dove grey chiffon reveals a silver studded bustier combining tough and soft elements."

I want I want I want!

Topman's just emailed their usual weekly pickings of new merchandise, this week they have an extensive range of new photographic tees.
The collection ranges from iconic rock tees like Jimmy Hendricks to the usual comedy tees like Frank Butcher. This has to be my fave though. One of the most famous Madonna shots ever taken by one of the best photographers of the time, Herb Ritts.
